The Department of Manuscripts and Textual Studies was founded in 1926, at one time with the establishment of Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Many outstanding Uktrainian scholars worked in the Department in Soviet and Post-Soviet periods (Jeremiah Izenshtok, Agapy Shamray, Sergy Zubkov, Mykola Syvachenko, Fedir Pogrebennik, Mykhaylyna Kotsubynska, and others).
Research activity in the Department is directly connected with the working of manuscripts that are kept in the Repository of Manuscripts of Shevchenko Institute of Literature. The work is conducted in three directions:
Work with funds: collecting the manuscripts and archives of Ukrainian writers, scientific description and organization of these materials. By now, the Department has the biggest in Ukraine special collection of materials on Ukrainian literature. In 1999 the research fellows of the Department made the first Guide to Repository of Manuscripts of Shevchenko Institute of Literature. Later information that was not included in the first edition of the Guide is added in the List of Processed Materials.
The specialists of the Department as well work at the creation of digital photo-copies of the manuscripts that are kept in the Repository of Manuscripts.
Research activity in the sphere of textual studies and literary source criticism: - textual analysis of manuscripts;
- literary research of primary texts;
- creation and publication history of literary works, their editions and variants, the problem of source text, problems of ascription, dating, composition etc.
Preparation of academic editions of Ukrainian writers and literary critics: editing, compiling, notes. The fellows of the Department took part in the preparation of the academic edition of collected works of Taras Shevchenko, criticism and literary works of Yevgen Grebinka, Marko Vovchok, Lionid Globov, Anatoly Svydnytsky, Panas Myrny, Ivan Franko, Lesya Ukrainka, Mykhaylo Kotsyubynsky, Pavl Tychyna, Maksym Rylsky, Vasyl Stus and other Ukrainian classical writers. From the very beginning the Department has had its periodical that in different times was titled as Literary Archive (1930—1931 рр.), Literary Heritage (1956—1957), Problems of Textual Studies (1968—1989). From 2004 till now the Department publishes Heritage. Literary Source Studies. Textual Studies.
